Zayda Jiménez: handcrafted piano and cello stools with a Spanish seal

Art has many expressions and many paths that come together when there is a motive like music. Zayda Jiménez is a talented Valencian pianist who is also a furniture restorer and designer of piano and cello chairs and stools. The Spanish artist makes each of her stools a true work of art that identifies with the pianist or cellist who owns it.

Today at Le Salón Musical, we are going to learn about the work of this creative avant-garde entrepreneur.

We want to learn about your project and naturally we would like to know: what made this idea come to you? What was the trigger that brought you here?
Hello! Thank you very much for your invitation.

The piano has been a faithful friend that has always accompanied me in my life since I was 6 years old, it is my instrument and also my confidant.

I began my first years at the conservatory studying with rented pianos and dreaming of growing up to have a grand piano at home, one like the one my childhood friend’s mother had and that fascinated me every time I went to play at her house.

The years, my passion for the piano and my daughters starting out in music were the reasons for fulfilling that childhood dream.

I remember and still feel the excitement when the dreamed piano arrived home: how its elegant beauty imposed itself, its mere presence filled any space, however… the stool that was supposed to create a WHOLE with the piano, did not accompany it.

That was the trigger for KAUNUS to be born: something as beautiful as my instrument had to be surrounded by more beauty.

I searched tirelessly for different, modern, designer, original piano benches… I didn’t find what I considered “the best companion” for my piano, so I decided to make it myself:

I was dedicated to furniture restoration and worked with many trades: carpenters, cabinetmakers, upholsterers, I had the idea and the hands to build it and so my project began… I thought that like me, there must be many more people in the world looking for a special piece to accompany their instrument and the initial idea of making my own bench became a 3-year career developing a product…

Your brand, Kaunus, has been on the market for three years now. Even in these very particular times that the world is experiencing, you have managed to continue with it and have managed to position yourself. What distinguishes your products?
KAUNUS grows on 3 values:

DESIGN, EXCLUSIVITY AND VANGUARD.

Kaunus is a disruptive brand that tries to break with the established. The designs of our legends are groundbreaking, we use materials and finishes never before seen in musical furniture (olive root, epoxy resin, gold plating and black nickel) we even dare to create oval stools (our Lola and Helene Legends).

Kaunus stools are EXCLUSIVE pieces. We only manufacture to order. More than 6 trades are involved in the COMPLETELY HANDMADE manufacture of each stool and they are numbered pieces and accredited by the certificate of authenticity that accompanies them.

We are at the forefront of height adjustment systems. Kaunus legends incorporate our exclusive height adjustment system using a gas spring, KHAS.

We are very clear that Kaunus is accompanied by exclusivity, we already know that in this wonderful artisanal work that you achieve there is an element of avant-garde and “ergonomic” innovation, so to speak, that has to do with the height adjustment of the stools, can you explain it to us?
Height adjustment on piano benches has been a differentiating element in recent years. From the traditional spindle mechanism we have moved to systems with softer gas springs when adjusting.

At Kaunus we are at the forefront and we have developed our own height adjustment system using a gas spring, but we wanted to innovate even more, incorporating a height display that allows us to know at all times the exact position chosen by each musician. KHAS (Kaunus Height Adjustment System) is a COMFORTABLE, SIMPLE AND PRECISE height adjustment mechanism.
